No.11 Are we just Cosmic Accidents?

Notes from C. Colson and Nancy Pearcey Pages 61 - 67

Did all this that we see "just happen"???? This small sphere, the planet Earth, did it "just happen" to be the right size and "just happened" to be the right distance from the sun so that life "just happened"to arise here. Did through the processes of random mutations and natural selection ,we humans "just happened" to appear on this planet.

What a Message? It tells our children that they're nothing more than a COSMIC ACCIDENT.

Small wonder that, over time, all language about a loving God who created them and loves them sounds more and more like a fairy tale.

Are all these so called coincidences really just... coincidences? Or did Someone design the universe this way?

Recent scientific research acknowledges that the physical structure of the Universe gives striking evidence of purpose and design.  They have proposed what is known as the anthropic principle, which states that the physical structure of the Universe is exactly what it must be in order to support life. We live in a cloud wrapped earth not like the other planets and stars. THE EARTH IS UNIQUE IN THE UNIVERSE..  There seems to bean endless list of preconditions that have been met only on our planet, as far as we know.

Why is the Earth so special? Is this just a coincidence? Or was it designed by a loving Creator who had us in mind from the very beginning?

Consider the Following: 1. The Earth's Orbit. The earth is a small sphere of just the right size that lies just at the right distance from its mother star, the sun. If the Earth was even slightly closer to the sun, all its water would boil away, and life would be impossible. Alternatively, if earth was only slightly farther away from the sun, all its water would freeze, and the terrestrial landscape would be nothing but barren deserts.
2. The Processes inside our bodies.  They all depend on these hospitable conditions. The chemical reactions necessary for life to function occur within a narrow temperature range, and the earth is the right distance from the Sun to fall within that range.  Also, the earth must remain at this allocated distance from the sun to maintain these temperatures; note: the nearly circular orbit of the earth not like elliptical orbits of other planets.

Are all these finely calibrated distances "just chance"? Or were they DESIGNED to support life?

3. The Example of Water. The existence of water on this planet is so often taken for granted.
Water has a host of properties that are essential to the existence of life.
- it is the only known substance where the solid state (ice) is less dense than its liquid state. This is why ice forms on the top of oceans and lakes and not at the bottom, allowing fish and all marine life to survive the winter.
-The water molecules have the hydrophobic effect which gives water the unique ability to shape proteins and nucleic acids in DNA. No other compound has anything like water's life supporting properties.

4. The Force of Gravity must be fine tuned so as to allow life to exist on this planet.

5. The Structure of the Atom.  From the stars in the farther-est heavens to every cell of our bodies - the atom itself is just a bundle of fortuitous coincidences. For example, in the atom, the neutron is just slightly more massive than the proton, which means that free neutrons (those not trapped within an atom) can decay and turn into protons. If this were reversed  - if it  were the proton that was larger and had a tendency to decay - the very structure of the Universe would be impossible.
What about the electrical charges of electrons and protons which balance off each other.

According to the Anthropic Principle gravity, electromagnetism, strong and weak nuclear forces and seeming arbitary and unrelated values in Physics all have one thing in common: They have precisely the right values needed to get a Universe to support life.

No.9. How did the whole Universe Begin?

Notes from Colson p.57 -67 Scientists  have completely reversed their theories in the past few decades. They thought for ages that the Physical Universe was eternal and therefore needs no 'creator'. Now they postulate that the universe did have an ultimate origin and that it began at a finite time in the past - just as the Bible teaches. Many ancient cultures believed that the material from which the Universe came was eternal. However, today "the indestructibility or permanence of matter" is a scientific fact" wrote a 19th Century proponent of materialism. For many years that is how things stood. Any thought of a Creator and the earth having a beginning was just bare religious faith standing in lonely opposition to established science. Now in the 20th Century several sources of new evidence appeared : the implications from general relativity theory that the Universe is expanding; that some stars exhibit "red shift", implying that they are moving out...

Notes from 'How Now shall we live', by C. Colson and N. Pearcey. pps 126-128 Why is our thinking so degraded when what I am is determined by what other people think I should be. Man is trying to create the ideal species capable of living in harmony and stability , a species free from all antiquated ideas and encumbrances such as family and child rearing. To ensure the unfettered pursuit of happiness , free sex is encouraged, and all purpose drug will be available. Life will be a perfect bliss. when it becomes burdensome or inconvenient, it is gently and mercifully ended. This is a bizarre fantasy. eugenics juːˈdʒɛnɪks/ noun  the science of improving a population by controlled breeding to increase the occurrence of desirable heritable characteristics.  This resulted in Eugenics - the idea of improving the human race and based upon evolution and the superior species. No.15 Who is this Guy?

How Now Shall We live? By C. Colson and N. Pearcey p. 97. In William Steig's Yellow & Pink. a delightfully whimsical picture book for children, two wooden figures wake up and ask, " Do you know what we're doing here?" So begins the debate between two marionettes over the Origin of their existence. Pink surveys their well formed features and concludes, " Someone must have made us. " Yellow disagrees. " I say that we're an accident," and he outlines the hypothetical scenario of how it might have happened. A branch might have broken off a tree and fallen on a sharp rock, splitting one end of the branch into two legs. Then the wind might have sent it tumbling down the a hill until it was chipped and shaped. Perhaps a flash of lightning struck in such a way as to splinter the wood into arms and fingers. Eyes might have been formed by woodpeckers boring in the wood. "With enough time, a thousand, a million, maybe two million and...
